Lessons from Designer Mom’s

In my blog reading today I stumbled across The Thread and their life lessons from designer Mom’s. The advice from each of these different mother’s (each successful in their own way) is something I wanted to share. My favorite piece of advice came from Kelly Wearstler.

“The best advice I can give my boys is the same advice my mother instilled in me: the only person who can make something happen for you is YOU. Be compassionate, be self-reliant, and love what you do.”

You can read the entire post here. For all of you last minute Mother’s Day shoppers, don’t forget to check out our gift guide.

2 day cleanse

For those of you that follow me on Instagram you may have noticed that I was doing a 2 day cleanse this week, and had quite a few questions about what I was doing. I rarely talk about my diet here on the blog but decided to share the smoothie recipes and my experience doing a cleanse. So, if your not interested and would rather hear about clothing or shoes, skip this post and check back in a few days for something else!

First thing first – I am not a doctor, a nutritionist, or an expert. Everything I do and choose to eat comes from what I’ve learned through my own research. There are so many routes to take when deciding what you put in your body, and I think it is up to each one of us to personally decide what we feel works best for us, and do everything in moderation. I’ve been a practicing vegetarian for a little over a year, and I say practicing because sometime a girls gotta have a steak, or bacon, or a hamburger and life is too short to feel guilty about eating. Whether you are a vegetarian, vegan, or doing paleo, I think what matters is that your making conscious decisions to live a healthier life.

One of my favorite online sources for nutritional information is Kimberly Snyder. I really like her approach to eating clean and looking well, and I drink her GGS in the mornings even when I’m not doing a cleanse. I especially like this post about why the green smoothies are superior to juicing, which is why I chose to do smoothies for the cleanse. Another good read from her blog is this one day cleanse that includes food to help detox.

I wanted to do a small cleanse to not only detox but to push me back into my healthy diet that I was deterring from. When we opened the store I started focusing less on what I was eating and more on the store, which led to me not feeling as good as I did when I was eating healthy. I thought this would be a good way to get back to a healthy routine and lifestyle. I also got my fiance to do it with me, can you believe that? I was pretty impressed that he tried it, and it’s always good to have a friend to talk too about it. The first day was a little hard because I just craved substance instead of liquids. I ate an avocado with salt and pepper at lunch to help that craving. In the evening, we stayed a little busy and away from home so I wasn’t tempted to snack.

Below is a list of the smoothies that I made during the cleanse. All of my measurements are estimates, because I would add as I needed too to get the taste I wanted. Also, in all of the green smoothies I blend the liquid and the greens first, then add the rest of the ingredients as I went. The recipes all make 2 servings of the smoothie. My recommendation is for you to make them when you plan on drinking them, because they taste better freshly made. I made mine ahead of time and while they were still good, they weren’t as good as the night before (especially the ones with chia seeds, since they expand in water). During the cleanse I also drank detox water, and that recipe is below as well.

And the last thing that I want all of yall to know is I did cheat on this cleanse. I’m not one for not eating if I get hungry, and the fact is that by the end of the day I was not only hungry, I was angry. And, hangry does not look good on anyone. I wish I could say I did it all in 2 days easy, but it was not easy at all. I highly suggest if you decide to do this, get a partner to do it with you that has some serious will power to see it through.

mother’s day

I spent this past weekend with my mom, closest aunt, and fiancé in Santa Fe finishing up our wedding planning. Although it was a quick trip and I wish it could’ve been longer, I’m still reminiscing on all of the fun we had there. From the amazing food, to the laughs, to the sentimental touches we’re putting on our wedding, it was a really great weekend. (oh, and the shopping was pretty good too.) On the tail end of beautiful weekend to Mothers day coming up, I got to thinking about my Mom. From being my biggest supporter, my friend, and the person I can always talk too, she is my everything. She is the reason I get to do what I love everyday and I get to live.

I think in the fast paced world we live in we forget to take the time to tell our mothers, aunts, and friends how much they mean to us and Mother’s day is the perfect time to do just that. I’ve compiled a list of all of my favorite things in the store that I think would be perfect gifts for the moms out there! Wether you want to indulge her with Voluspa perfumes and candles, or treat her to some pretty Margaret Elizabeth jewels, we’ve got a good selection of different price points that your Mom is sure to love. I hope you all have a beautiful Mother’s day with the ones you love this weekend!
